DIY or Don’t? Knowing When to Call in the Experts
It’s Not All or Nothing
Every renovation hits that decision moment, do you roll up your sleeves or pick up the phone? For most homeowners, it’s rarely about ego or expense. It’s about planning with purpose.
Some parts of a reno just aren’t built for DIY. And that’s okay. Smart renovators know their limits and when to lean on expert help.
What to DIY with Confidence
Not every task needs a tradie. In fact, there are a few solid wins you can chalk up yourself without too much risk or stress:
Demolition (with prep): Pulling out old cabinetry or vanities is fair game. Just check for plumbing, electrics or asbestos first.
Painting and patching: A fresh coat of paint can completely shift a space. Grab the right roller and filler, and you’re good to go.
Swapping hardware: Replacing door handles, towel rails or even a shower head is low-stakes but high impact.
Flatpack vanities or shelving: If you’ve got a drill and a steady hand, these installs are well within reach.
Jobs Better Left to the Pros
There’s a line in every renovation where DIY stops making sense. These jobs require licensed trades or specialist knowledge:
Plumbing & electrical: Anything involving pipes or wires should be handled by licensed professionals. It’s not just safer. It’s legally required in most cases.
Waterproofing: Especially in bathrooms and laundries. Improper waterproofing can cause leaks, long-term damage, and expensive repairs.
Tiling in wet zones: Precision is key here. An uneven floor or poorly cut tile can cause water issues and ruin the finish.
Structural work: Knocking out walls? Reinforcing beams? These need an engineer's eye and council approval.
When you factor in warranties, resale value and peace of mind, bringing in the pros is often the cheaper choice long-term.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
Let’s be real, DIY mistakes can be expensive. A leaking mixer caused by a dodgy install can lead to water damage. Misaligned cabinetry can throw your whole layout off. Budget blowouts often start with "we thought we could do it ourselves."
Then comes the rework. More time, more money, more stress. In contrast, hiring a qualified professional means fewer headaches and a cleaner finish.
So before you dive in, ask yourself: what’s the cost if I get this wrong?
