Small Outdoor Kitchen and BBQ Area Ideas

Layla Sawyer -

Limited space shouldn't limit your outdoor entertaining options. This guide will show you how to create a functional and comfortable mini outdoor kitchen for your small backyard, patio or balcony. We'll show you practical strategies and space-saving solutions to get the most out of your space. Whether you're a grill master or just starting out, this guide will provide the ideas you need to transform your small outdoor space into somewhere you can create memories with friends and family.

How to design your small outdoor kitchen

Small spaces do need a little extra planning to maximise layout. Here's how to design an outdoor kitchen with limited square meterage.

1. Figure out your needs

First, make a list of your must-have features. In a small kitchen, you may need to make some sacrifices. Be honest about how often you'll use an appliance — a large grill might be tempting, but if you're only cooking for a few people most of the time, a smaller option will free up space.

2. Choose elements wisely

Clever design will allow you to make fewer sacrifices. Look for fixtures and appliances that don’t take up much room and are multifunctional. Combo BBQ door/drawers provide storage space while still allowing access. A sink with a cutting board cover cuts down on prep space.

3. Covered vs uncovered

Whether or not to cover your outdoor kitchen depends on your lifestyle, climate and preferences. A covered area protects your grill and appliances from the elements, extending their lifespan and allowing you to cook year-round, rain or shine. However, a pergola may not be possible for everyone, so work within your budget and space.

4. Decide on layout

If your backyard is wide but shallow and an L-shaped kitchen won't fit, opt for a long, linear island instead. Get creative! You could even have separate grill and bar seating areas in different parts of your yard.

5. Pick compact seating

Think about stools that fold up or tuck away under the counter when not in use. This provides flexibility and keeps the area feeling open. Don’t have room for seating year round? Consider a folding table and chairs that you can easily store when not needed.

5 small outdoor kitchen and bbq area ideas

Limited space doesn't have to limit your outdoor kitchen vision. Find space-saving solutions and creative layouts that maximise every square metre.

Compact corner kitchen

This is a great option for small patios. Tuck your BBQ and a counter into a corner, adding a small table for additional workspace that tucks away when not in use. Hang a rail for tongs and aprons to make use of vertical space.

Island with built-in seating

Kitchen islands are a perfect example of multifunctional fixtures. Build an outdoor kitchen island with prep space on one side and bar seating on the other. Use stools that fold up or tuck under the counter for easy storage.

Mobile kitchen

This is perfect for renters. Just because you can’t make any permanent changes, you shouldn’t miss out on having an outdoor kitchen. Invest in a BBQ with built-in prep space and storage underneath, or keep it simple with a portable BBQ.

Multi-zone entertaining

If your backyard allows for some separation, create designated zones for cooking, dining and relaxing. Place your BBQ and prep area under a covered area and set up a separate table and chairs where it’s most comfortable to sit. If your outdoor space is particularly small, create the illusion of outdoor seating with bi-folding or sliding glass doors connecting your indoor dining and outdoor area.

Balcony fix

Not everyone has a backyard — if you live in a unit, there are extra considerations. Station your appliances against the wall and lean into your vertical space. Rails and shelves for extra storage should go above, and under-counter storage below. A small fold-down prep table attached to the railing is just one way to make the most of your space.

Make the most of your outdoor space

With these ideas, you can design a small outdoor kitchen that perfectly suits your needs and space. Not only will you get more use out of your backyard or balcony, but it might even boost your home's value down the line. Take your time planning, prioritise what matters most to you and enjoy your new outdoor kitchen!
