Functional Yet Stylish: What is a European Laundry?

Layla Sawyer -

Modern problems require modern solutions, and the European laundry is exactly that. These laundries, born from the need for space-saving solutions in dense European cities, are now popular all over the world. They’re a functional, stylish and thought-out alternative to traditional laundries. But what exactly are they? Read on for more on what a European laundry is and how to design one for your home.

What is a European laundry?

You probably don’t need a refresher, but a traditional laundry is a room that contains your washer, dryer, sink and storage cabinets. A European laundry takes this idea and compacts it into a cupboard; it’s a practical solution for homes with limited space or no need for a separate laundry room.

European style laundry features

A European laundry includes everything you'd expect from a classic laundry room but in a smaller setting. You'll find a washing machine, dryer, shelves and sink packed into a compact and efficient design.

The biggest difference is the layout — European laundries usually have more vertical storage, less bench space and sometimes smaller/fewer appliances.

How do you design a European laundry?

Working with a small space doesn't mean you have to sacrifice form and function. Here’s how to design a functional European laundry that also feels intentional and stylish.

Location and layout

  • Placement: Think about noise levels when choosing a location. Our favourite locations are away from rest areas, e.g., a hallway, kitchen or bathroom.
  • Space: Use every square centimetre by carefully planning the layout. Stack units, choose a compact sink and leave space for cabinetry.
  • Doors: Traditional doors are bulky and get in the way of laundry time. Sliding, bi-fold or pocket doors are your best bet.

Functionality

  • Appliances: Choose energy-efficient, front-loading washing machines and dryers designed for smaller spaces.
  • Essentials: Install a small sink for hand washing and spot-cleaning clothes. The sink should be deep enough to make soaking easy.
  • Ventilation: Proper ventilation will help prevent moisture buildup and mould. Install an exhaust fan or keep the doors open while your machines are on.
  • Storage: Put up shelves to hold cleaning supplies and linens and tall cabinets to hide your ironing board or vacuum cleaner.

Style

  • Colours: There are no rules — choose something that makes you happy. Experiment with a vibrant accent or choose a calming neutral that works with the surrounding aesthetic.
  • Tiles: Room for a backsplash? Use tiles to make the space feel polished. The small space behind the sink is perfect for this.
  • Lighting: You can’t do your laundry if you can’t see it! Under-cabinet lights, small pendant lights or downlights look great and brighten your workspace.

Modern Australian

This European laundry by
@lydiamaskiellinteriors went viral when we shared it. And for good reason! It is full of personality. The first thing you notice is the deep green cabinetry and neutral accents — something we see a lot in Modern Australian design. Despite the small space, there's a sink big enough for laundry-day activities, paired with our antique brass round mixer. The overall vibe is organic and organised.

Minimalist

Loni at @adoremagazine has found a convenient spot for her laundry: the kitchen! A true extension of the space, this European laundry pulls from its environment — notice the continuation of marble, pops of white and brushed brass tapware. The space is clean and minimalistic, yet it's clear that careful planning went into its design.

Is a European style laundry right for you?

While they were once seen as a practical choice for small spaces, European laundries have evolved to work in any home. To decide if a European-style laundry is right for you, think about your laundry habits: does this compact setup suit the way you do laundry? Large families may prefer a separate room with plenty of room for folding and ironing.

If you do decide to go down the European route, take the opportunity to make this small space feel like a nice part of your home. An important piece of the puzzle is tapware; Yabby laundry taps are the perfect finishing touch for a stylish European laundry — shop our collection today.
