Making the Most of Your Small Kitchen

Layla Sawyer -

Do you dream of entertaining but feel confined by your small kitchen? No worries! With a few clever tricks and tweaks, you can transform your kitchen into a stylish space that works at its full potential.

This guide will walk you through small kitchen ideas and changes that are easy enough for anyone to action. Let’s get into it.

4 small kitchen storage ideas

Let’s be real — good storage solutions are key in a small kitchen design. Luckily, we have four small kitchen storage ideas to share.

1. Use vertical space

Utilise vertical space with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry to keep kitchen goods on their shelves instead of cluttering the countertops.

2. Open shelving

Bulky cabinets can make a small room feel a little confined. It may seem counterintuitive, but open shelving can reduce the visual noise in your compact kitchen. Open shelves take advantage of vertical space for storage and let you showcase your favourite dishes, glassware and decor pieces.

3. Corner cabinets

Corner cabinets with pull-out shelves are a great option for tricky corners you might otherwise not know what to do with. They give you easy access to hidden-away cooking supplies in your kitchen.

4. Multi-functional solutions

Don’t overlook multi-functional solutions for your kitchen. Choose furniture with built-in storage and kitchen equipment with two uses (e.g. lidded bowls, collapsable mixing bowls, ottoman with storage). Get creative with it!

Making the kitchen feel bigger

Rather than getting caught up in square meters, use the power of illusion. Here are some ideas for making a small kitchen more spacious without knocking down walls.

1. Bright colours

Any interior designer, including our own Courtney Cole, will say the same thing about light colours.

"Using light colours in a kitchen helps to open up the space by reflecting more natural light, creating an airy and expansive feel. This can make even small kitchens appear larger and more inviting."

If you want to bounce light around the room for an open feeling, opt for bright paint. For your hardware, stick with a similar scheme — some of our lighter favourites are chrome, brushed brass and warm brushed nickel.

2. Mirrors

On the topic of bouncing light around the room, mirrors and other reflective surfaces will help create depth and openness in your small kitchen. A strategically placed mirror will help do the trick, but if you haven’t got the space for one, glossy tiles and reflective hardware can have the same effect.

3. Space-friendly patterns

When it comes to patterns, less is more when you want to open your space. Use simple shapes or small patterns in your choice of splashback or tiling to add visual interest without being too busy.

4. Tile floors

Cleanliness is key to creating spaciousness in your kitchen, and what better way to keep a kitchen clean than with tiles? Kitchen floor tiles aren’t groundbreaking, but there are a few ways in which you can leverage them to create the illusion of more space. As mentioned, bright, neutral colours are your best bet — white, ivory and grey tiles look good in pretty much every home.
