4 Tips to Organise Your Bathroom

Layla Sawyer -

Take it from us, there’s no better feeling than having a cleverly organised bathroom. Not only does it help you get a grip on everything you own, you’ll feel mentally lighter when everything is in its place, you’ll be able to find anything you’re looking for quickly and you’ll no longer waste as much precious time tidying and maintaining an abundance of unnecessary “stuff”.

Your bathroom, of course, plays hosts to all your bathroom needs and items, such as toiletries, cleaning supplies, toilet paper and towels. To keep all these products from overwhelming the space – no matter the size of your bathroom – it’s just a matter of organising them well.

From purging and decluttering regularly to making efficient use of vertical space and leaning into organisational tools such as dividers and labels, these are some of the most helpful tips to help you get your bathroom in order.

1. Drawer / Mirror Cabinet Organisers

Storage cabinets and drawers in bathrooms can quickly become a bit of a disorganised mess if you let clutter get the better of you. Keep the mess at bay by organising all your important bits and pieces that need to live there.

A great way to organise everything is by using clear containers and labels to separate everything into categories and be able to see at a glance where the item you’re looking for is stored. Use drawer dividers or small tubs to separate the smaller items like makeup, razors, hair ties and other everyday items.

For deeper drawers, consider pull-out trays or baskets to make grabbing items easier. As well as the easier access, the benefit of using pull-out trays is that you’ll be able to see everything you’re storing when it’s extended, meaning no more items that are lost and forgotten about simply because they’ve been pushed way up the back of the cabinet.

2. Use Vertical Space

When you have a smaller bathroom to work with  – or even if you just want to make better use of your average or large size bathroom– utilising vertical space can make a world of  difference.

Tall cabinets can be useful in helping to make efficient use of the room. Consider a tall, narrow cabinet that is the same height as  the ceiling. This can store towels, cleaning products and toiletries without taking up much floor space. Using storage containers and dividing the cabinet into sections for different bathroom items can further help streamline its daily use and keep tidiness in check.

Another smart storage solution for a smaller bathroom is using hooks and racks to help you make the most of the available space. Utilise the back of the bathroom door or spare walls with towel hooks, robe hooks or use hanging baskets to store small items.

Floating shelves, which can be installed above bathroom vanities or the toilet cistern, can also be helpful to place items such as toilet paper or smaller bathroom items and frees up more room in cabinets for other products.

3. Separate Items You Use Daily Vs Not As Frequently

If you use an item everyday, make life simpler for yourself by keeping it within easy reach. For items you’ll need regularly like shampoos, soaps and body washes, there’s no need to pack them away after each use. Instead, store them in your shower on a shelf or ledge or buy a specifically designed storage solution like a shower caddy to house these products. Similarly, toothbrushes and hand wash should be stored on your vanity’s counter top in holders designed for this. Be wary of storing too many items on top of the vanity, however, as this can start to look messy.

On the flip side, items you use less regularly, such as shower cleaner or other cleaning products should be stored away in the vanity or cupboard as these won’t be used as regularly. Avoid clutter by separating like products into storage containers or by using dividers and get rid of, or use up, any duplicate items so you don’t have duplicates taking up valuable space.

Items like towels that are currently in use can be hung up while extra towels can be stored away in cupboards to keep them out of sight. Mount adhesive hooks on the back of cabinet or vanity doors to hang up items like hair brushes, scissors and pumice stones to free up extra storage space. Storage baskets can be handy for housing spare toilet paper rolls or installing a wall-mounted toilet paper holder.

4. Declutter Regularly

The less you own, the easier it is to organise the items you do have – and to maintain that ideal organisation. Decluttering is an essential step when it comes to keeping an organised and tidy space, including your bathroom.

Kick off your organisation journey by sifting through everything you own in the bathroom. Channel your inner Marie Condo and ask yourself whether you really need to keep each item and offload it if it no longer has a practical use or “sparks joy”. Purge items you don’t use regularly such as old lotions, expired medications, dried up makeup or extra towels.

Sort through your toiletries and discard empty or out of date bottles and make sure you use up anything useful like extra soaps and skincare items before purchasing any more. Got an excess of things like gifted hand creams, body washes or other items that have yet to expire and you’re unlikely to get through yourself? Consider regifting to a friend or loved one or giving away these items for free to others that may make better use of them. Keep only what you truly need and use often in your bathroom cabinet.
